"And this you can know - fear the time when Manself will not suffer and die for a concept, for this one quality is the foundation of Manself, and this one quality is man, distinctive in the universe."
-From The Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck
As long as scenes like the following occur, I can never completely lose faith in my fellow human beings:
When I learned of the pauper's wages US teachers received and, even then, many of them had to use their own money to buy school supplies for their students, I wondered how a society becomes so debased. Were US teachers afraid of taking collective action? Were they somehow intimidated? Now they're standing up for themselves - finally.
ReplyDeleteBTW, how did the rightwing in US politics become associated with "red"? Go back to McCarthy and the Red Scare, the years of red-baiting. Red was always the colour of the commies. Their soldiers wore enameled red stars on their caps. Their Migs were adorned in red stars. The hammer and sickle were gold but the flag itself was red. Now the wealthy and progressive states are Blue America. I don't get it.
You raise a question I have often wondered about, Mound. Here is a surprising explanation: https://www.thoughtco.com/meaning-behind-democrat-and-republican-colors-3368087
