Forgiving And Forgetting?

I read an article recently that posed the question of whether or not relationships can be repaired that were damaged or torn asunder over disagreements about Covid restrictions, mandates and vaccinations. In other words, once the pandemic is over or even now, when it is at least manageable, is it possible to forgive and forget?

One of the stories in the article discussed an ICU nurse on the frontlines of trying to save those who had fallen ill, only to be met by a reaction from her husband that has torn her marriage apart:

“He just invalidated everything I said. He tried to turn it around on me. Nothing I said mattered. I just felt like it was my job to convince him.”

Marie said her husband and his friends get most of their information from far-right sources, such as U.S. conspiracist site Infowars, Rebel News and Canadian anti-vax activist Chris Sky.

Things got progressively worse when the vaccine came out and Marie, as a health worker, was one of the first in her city to get a shot.

“All of a sudden, he told me I was only going to live for a couple more years.”

Clearly, such lunacy would be hard to live with. Even those trained to deal with afflicted people are having a hard time here. One such person is University of Toronto psychologist  Steve Joordens, who

has a close relative who is against COVID-19 vaccines and masks. Initially, he tried to talk to the person about it. But after a few difficult and heated conversations, he stopped.

“We cannot agree to disagree. So, we don’t talk,” he said, “which is tough.”

Further complicating things, this relative has power of attorney over Joordens’s mother, and decided that she would not be vaccinated.

“I had this real worry that Mom is going to die alone. That’s what horrified me,” he said. “That’s a hard thing for me to get over.”

Another psychologist,  Hilary Bersieker, suggests the difficulty lies in how we see those who challenged and flouted Covid protocols:

[G]etting vaccinated and following public health measures are caring and socially conscious things to do, whereas refusing the shot and flouting health rules might be selfish. The more such decisions are moralized, the harder they can be to get over...

That really is the crux of the matter for me. Although I have no friends or relatives who fall into the refusenik camp, if I had, I doubt that I would ever be able to truly forget what the crisis revealed about a side of their character/level of cognition previously unseen. In being so selfish and benighted, how could I ever really respect them or feel any affinity for them again?

People who discount the science, content with fringe sites filled with fake information, have a lot invested in their stances, one that suggests ego triumphing over goodwill and community spirit. I leave you with the following Twitter video that exemplifies such individuals. The woman in it cravenly claims to be taking a principled stand.

Be sure to watch to the end.

Putting Things Into Perspective

We have heard so many words these past few days, noble utterances coming from ignoble sources. I believe the following sets things into an interesting perspective.

Indicted By Their Words

H/t Theo Moudakis

I find myself singularly uninterested in the so-called freedom convoy making its way to Ottawa. Peopled by many rabid-anti-vaxxers and those filled with a messianic zeal in the belief that they are 'standing up for freedom and democracy', they are in fact arguing for the opposite, a short-circuiting of  democracy, demanding the government's immediate resignation.

They are truly deluded and contemptible.

The true measure of these benighted people can be taken in the kind of hate-filled screeds they send off to politicians, medical personnel and journalists. It is the latter that Bob Hepburn writes about, saying it is time to call out nasty, hate-filled anti-vaxers.

Here are some of the milder excerpts of missives he has received:

“If I see you on the street I would Smash your face in YOU FU*KING IGNORANT COMMIE,” wrote a person identifying themselves as Sonny.

“You are a hate-monger and a sad excuse for a journalist. What you are doing is un-Canadian. You are a piece of sh* t,” wrote Rob, who works as a multimedia specialist.

“You are a menace to society. You have obviously lost your mind and need mental help if you think unvaccinated people are a threat to society. You are deranged,” wrote Nicole from Alberta.

“This is what causes racism. You have no business knowing what goes in my body. You piece of human waste,” wrote John.

“God bless your soul if you still even have one,” wrote Diane.

“You are an arrogant moron,” wrote Dave.

“Stop spewing hate and writing sh*t articles. Grow a pair and write something useful. Gerbil looking ass,” wrote Brad.

Not surprisingly, these cowards refused Hepburn's request to publish their names, places where they live, or companies they work at if the email was sent from a business. Such hate-mongers shun the sanitizing light of day.

Hepburn ends his piece with this:

It’s time to call them out — and it’s time that others who are unvaccinated get to know the type of anti-vaxxers who believe they speak on their behalf.

And well we should. Their very words indict them.

Covidiots: The Clay Feet Edition

Boomers like me often live in the past when it comes to musical idols: the Beatles, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison. to name but three, were the gods at whose altars we worshipped. The problems with gods, however, is that they often have clay feet, something we would have been inclined perhaps to overlook in our younger years.

The time for such willful blindness, however, has passed, especially since some idols are now abusing their power to the detriment of society. Going beyond the incomprehensible and inexcusable anti-lockdown stance taken by fellow-musician Van Morrison, Eric Clapton has gone into the realm of the absurd, claiming that those of us who have acted responsibly by getting vaccinated against Covid-19 are victims of mass hypnosis.

In a new interview for The Real Music Observer YouTube channel, Eric has claimed that [...] subliminal messaging hidden in advertising led people to get the jab.

His eyes were 'opened' by

....a guy, Mattias Desmet [professor of clinical psychology at Ghent University in Belgium], [who] talked about it.

'And it's great. The theory of mass formation hypnosis. And I could see it then. Once I kind of started to look for it, I saw it everywhere.

'Then I remembered seeing little things on YouTube which were like subliminal advertising. It had been going on for a long time: that thing about "you will own nothing and you will be happy."

'And I thought, "What's that mean?" And bit by bit, I put a rough kind of jigsaw puzzle together. And that made me even more resolute.'

Mass formation psychosis - an attempt to hypnotise groups of people to follow messages against their will - has been widely discredited by scientists.

What led Clapton into this disordered thinking? It was his personal experience with the AstraZeneca vaccine which, he says, worsened his pre-existing peripheral neuropathy.

In a message to his music producer, he said: 'I took the first jab of AZ [AstraZeneca] and straight away had severe reactions which lasted ten days.'

The 76-year-old said he 'recovered eventually' but suffered further 'disastrous reactions' six weeks later after the second shot.

He added: 'My hands and feet were either frozen, numb or burning, and pretty much useless for two weeks, I feared I would never play again...

'I should never have gone near the needle. But the propaganda said the vaccine was safe for everyone.'

I am certainly willing to admit the possibility that the vaccine, in his case, worsened his neuropathy. However, doctors say that the risks of getting Covid are greater than the risk of adverse reactions from vaccines. In any event, what I find unforgiveable about Clapton's stance is his monstrous ego. Because he says he suffered an adverse reaction, he is now actively discouraging others from getting protection, putting countless lives at risk.

That is not the work of a god. It is more like that of a devil.

A Viable Alternative?

Given the contentious nature of measures to force the anti-vaxxers into line, perhaps the following is a viable alternative?

How To Deal With Flagrant Stupidity

H/t Theo Moudakis

Unlike viruses that allegedly ultimately 'burn themselves out', stupidity and the flagrant disregard for public health and safety will always be with us. Toronto Star readers have some ideas on how to deal with them:

Time to raise the price for those who still won’t get vaxxed, Jan. 9

I was born January 1940 into a world at war. One of my earliest memories is of the blackout.

People did this for two reason: First, to protect themselves, and second, to protect the neighbourhood. It was not perfect protection; we all know of the thousands that were killed by bombs and it had its danger, such as tripping over things and the people who thought the darkness gave them the opportunity for crime. Even so, the benefits outweighed the danger.

I think the same should apply to vaccinations: you get vaccinated to protect yourself and the people in your neighbourhood. It is the only protection we have. The benefits outweigh the danger, and it should be the law with fines for those who refuse to follow the rules.

Keith Parkinson, Cambridge, Ont.

In a democratic society, majority rules. So why is it our spineless politicians are letting the minority — the anti-vaxxers — rule?

It is time to have the vaccine passport mandated for entry to any type of business.

J. Armour, Mississaug

And finally, a reader offers this about the hapless Erin O'Toole:

Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole said on TV recently something to the effect of: “We just have to realize not everyone will agree to vaccination.”

Isn’t that like saying we are never going to solve homelessness or drug addiction, so Canadians should just suck it up and learn to live with the reality?

What a great strategy — no more funding for those ongoing issues, so why waste money and resources on problems that seem futile?

Is this the Conservative leader’s plan for balancing the books if he ever became prime minister?

A Failure Of Citizenship

That is the assessment in today's Toronto Star editorial of those who refuse to get vaccinated, thereby holding the rest of us (or, as I like to say, the sane majority) hostage.

And it is time to start making them pay for their obdurate, anti-social stance.

It is their irresponsibility that is largely to blame for the restraints under which Canadians are currently required to live.

It is no surprise, then, and largely to be applauded, that exasperated jurisdictions from Quebec to countries in Europe have opted to raise the cost of demonstrably anti-social behaviour.

In Quebec, the province’s health minister Christian Dubé announced this past week that, as of Jan. 18, Quebecers will have to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination to access provincial liquor and cannabis stores.

“If they can’t protect themselves, we will protect them against themselves,” said Dubé. “And we will make sure that they understand very clearly that if they don’t want to be vaccinated, they just stay home.”

European jurisdictions are hardening their hearts against the vaccine-refusniks with some relish. For example, the French President wants to make their lives hell:

Macron told the newspaper Le Parisien that he wants to “piss off” unvaccinated people by making their lives so complicated that they’ll relent and accept the vaccine. The unvaccinated, he said, are reneging on the obligations of citizenship.

Other European countries are getting tougher with the unvaxxed. Italy requires proof of vaccination – or of having recovered from COVID — for entry to a host of public spaces. Greece is levying a monthly fine (called a “health fee”) of 100 euros ($144) on people over 60 who won’t get their shots.

Unlike Erin O'Toole, who pleads for understanding and accommodation for those who thumb their noses at the health and safety of their fellow-citizens, most prefer the stick over the carrot at this critical juncture.

But right now the responsible majority are paying an enormous price for the stubbornness of the recalcitrant – and it is not the former who should be asked to make endless accommodations.

The majority of people who “did the right thing” and got vaccinated are effectively being held hostage to the selfishness of the few. At this point it’s entirely reasonable to raise the price of irresponsibility, and make life more difficult for those who won’t get their shots.

Ontario and other provinces should follow Quebec’s example and turn the screws further on the unvaxxed.

To that, I have nothing to add other than my whole-hearted agreement.

The Unvarnished Truth

H/t Theo Moudakis

Truth be told, I don't feel much like writing these days. The news is unrelentingly grim, the pandemic soldiers on, and the stupid continue to run around extolling their 'gospel.' My sympathy/empathy for the unvaxxed is non-existent, and given the deaths they are and will be responsible for through cancelled heart and cancer surgeries because their kind are filling the hospitals, I have reached the point that if they do expire from the disease, I really don't care.

Just like I don't care about the planeload of covidiots that chartered a Sunwing plane to Mexico. You have probably already seen the video, but if not, have a look.

I am happy to report that Sunwing, Air Transat and Air Canada are refusing them transport home.

Oh, and one more thing. Thirty of the miscreants have come down with Covid.

My heart does not bleed for them

Chain Of Fools

As I have said before, people who read this blog will know I have zero patience for the idiot brigades known as anti-vaxxers. Convinced of the 'righteousness' of their cause, these pseudo-martyrs insist on spreading their 'gospel' in the most confrontational ways possible, causing all manner of disruption, discomfort and despair to working people not in the grip of their insane monomania.

The following took place in an Ottawa Dollarama:

The woman who was recently handcuffed at a children’s vaccine clinic in Whitby and sleeping in a restaurant in Peterborough, looked like she started some of the issues at the Dollarama in Ottawa tonight.

H/t @EatsFood2

Here's what happened when the police arrived:

Message to anti-vaxxers: Please keep your insane preoccupations at home; if you must share your 'wisdom', please do it in chat groups where you can be with your own kind, leaving the rest of us to carry on the best we can during difficult times.

And if all else fails, you might want to work on your choreography.

Let Those With Eyes See

This was posted by a FB friend. Its purpose, I hope, is self-evident.

😂😂😂 copied from another group I thought it was hilarious 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I refuse to put on winter tires because:

This is my car, my choice, my freedom.

The effectiveness of winter tires isn't proven, unless it's from studies conducted by the manufacturers (you're surprised).

My neighbor Fernande was in an accident after putting her winter tires on.

Some are already at their 3rd game of tires, this proves their inefficiency.

We don't know what they are made of.

Tire giants scare us with winter just to get rich.

Btw, it was the tire giants who invented snow and spread it at night when you sleep.

If I have tires the government can follow me in the snow.

Educate yourself, open your eyes, stop being a sheep!

This year winter tires I say no!

UPDATED: To The Willfully Benighted

Ah, if only the willfully stupid among us could be ridiculed and that would be the end of it. Unfortunately, those errant souls persist in trying to shove their ignorance down the throats of others.

Last weekend anti-vaccine demonstrators gathered outside a clinic in North Bay called One Kids Place and tried to intimidate a mother taking her 7-year-old son to get his first shot.

Abby Blaszczyk says she had to endure a torrent of abuse as she escorted her son Nolan, who had just become eligible for a COVID vaccine.

“They told me I … was murdering my son, I was committing genocide, stuff like that,” she told CBC News. “And then, just misinformation about the vaccine itself.”

Like the infection they are, the anti-vaxxers insist on spreading their benightedness.

...  in Windsor last week anti-vaxxers picketed another clinic that was offering vaccines to kids between 5 and 11. They carried signs with slogans like, “It’s not a vaccine. It’s a bioweapon.”

Some may wonder why I have such an obvious and deep antipathy towards these people. Part of the reason, of course is that, as a teacher for 30 years, my career revolved around critical thinking. To see that abandoned so wholeheartedly by some is disheartening. But my larger contempt is for the motivation of these people, their insistence that they are right, and the damage they seek to do to their fellow citizens by their obdurate refusal to think of society as a whole and get vaccinated to afford the best protection possible for all.

Parse it any way you want, but their egocentric selfishness more than merits society's widespread condemnation.

Gone To Glory

Somehow, my heart, which should be heavy, feels gratitude at the news that this crazed evangelical, who urged his followers not to get vaccinated, is no longer with us.

Daystar Television
It’s with a heavy heart we announce that Marcus Lamb, president and founder of Daystar Television Network, went home to be with the Lord this morning. The family asks that their privacy be respected as they grieve this difficult loss. Please continue to lift them up in prayer.

What the bereaved family does not reveal is this little nugget:

Marcus Lamb Cause Of Death – Anti-Vax Televangelist Marcus Lamb has passed away from Covid-19 on Tuesday, 30, November 2021. Lamb’s passing was confirmed by Mark Lowry on his Facebook page. Lamb died  Tuesday morning, November 30,  2021 leaving his loved ones devastated and broken.

Truly, the Lord works in mysterious yet productive ways.

It's All A Matter Of Perspective, I Guess

Some people are losing good union jobs because of their 'beliefs'. No doubt those being fired from well-paid positions at Toronto's TTC, from various hospitals, etc. see themselves as principled martyrs for refusing vaccine mandates.

Others, however, see them in a different light.

H/t Patrick Corrigan

It's all a matter of perspective, I guess.

A Peek Inside The House Of Ford

Although the newspapers are apparently shying away from this, there is strong evidence of a breach in the dyke of official solidarity in Doug Ford's family. And that breach is his daughter Krysta, who, it seems, is unhappy with current societal regulations regarding Covid-19.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford's eldest daughter Krista has a bit of a history with anti-vax rants, voicing her vaccine skepticismlove of poppies over masksdislike of vaccine passports, and steadfast support for fringe conspiracy theories.

The former football-playing 30-year-old — whose private Instagram profile refers to her as a 'police wife' — got heated on social media in both the figurative and literal sense this week, going on a sweaty cardio rant after her Toronto cop/bodybuilder husband was sent home on unpaid leave for failing to comply with the police service's vaccination mandate.

Sergeant Dave 'Juggernaut' Haynes (really, that's his actual nickname) of 31 Division has served on the force for 20 years, and wife Krista is furious about his suspension, a move which applies to all Toronto Police Service employees who refuse to get vaccinated or disclose their status.

Her fury is being vented via social media:

H/t Caryma Sa'd

But wait! Justice is coming:

One ardently hopes that given all her furious spinning, some much-needed oxygen will make its way to her brain.
