To Be Young, Gifted, And Gay - Part Two

While I wholeheartedly agree that no one has the right to pry into a person's sexual orientation (except in cases of arrant hypocrisy), I still feel such admiration for and encouragement about the human spirit when people choose to reveal it. Following Michael Sam's recent revelation that he is gay, Canadian actress Ellen Page has made the announcement that she is as well.

In the following video, a testament to her integrity, Page talks about the priorities we all should have. I defy you not to be inspired by her words:

P.S. The audio volume of the video is somewhat low, so you may wish to turn on the closed caption option.

  1. Lorne, I was really dismayed as I pored through the international online media to learn how news outlets as far distant as Japan were running the Ellen Page story. What is wrong with us as a civilization that people have to "come out" and then that is deemed as particularly newsworthy?

Is it really that difficult for us, as a society, to accept a person's sexuality as a personal matter and nobody else's business? I don't care what the hell you are. I do take offence to ostentatious displays of sexuality, gay or straight. Sexual orientation is a private matter but sexual activity should also be kept private.

    1. I agree completely, Mound. I have always found open and ostentatious displays of passion in poor taste regardless of sexual orientation, but that is just my sensibility.

With regard to the coverage of Ellen Page, I think and hope that eventually, a person's orientation will not be deemed especially newsworthy. We are clearly not yet there, but perhaps with more declarations in the spirit of Page and Michael Sam will decrease people's prurient interest in such matters.
