Lorne, Noam Chomsky is talking about rational way of doing things. The White House, Congress and CIA will say Chomsky got to be kidding. Look at the Iraq war - intelligence provided by CIA, George W. Bush and Cheney's reaction and Congress's stamp of approval. Do you notice in this whole saga any rational behaviour?
It is big the corporations, such as oil companies, run the show and puppeteer the government.
Lorne, there is a serious problem when it comes to public. In the U.S middle class is shrinking. There are around 2% or so who are superrich. A majority is doing low wage jobs and many are unemployed and poor. This majority has their jobs with these corporations. Thus corporations control public too. Remember they used to give money to their employees to donate to candidates of their choice. Now that U.S Supreme Court has removed any limit on corporations for political donations, corporations don’t have to donate through their employees anymore.
It is the middle class who can shake up the government but being a small part of the population their impact is a lot less effective.
Harper is doing the same in Canada and that is to shrink the middle class. And that is the dilemma both in U.S and Canada. Good luck democracy!!
There is an interesting column in this morning's Star, LeDaro, which touches upon some of the concerns you raise here. Thomas Walkom, in assessing harper's handling of the economy, writes:
Jobs? The Harper government’s free-market solution has been to erode wages and import cheap temporary foreign labour, all the while allowing Canadian firms to outsource good jobs overseas.
Says a lot, doesn't it, about our current situation?

I think you have certainly identified the key players here, LeDaro. The question is, when will the public outrage reach critical mass?
