There is no "people" for which anyone can claim to speak, Lorne. American society is as riven as it has been since the Civil War. There are rival camps, each eyeing the other with hostility and suspicion. This is a cultivated result. Dividing the public is an essential requirement for the transition from democracy to oligarchy. Keep them at each other's throats and they're less of a worry to those who would have real cause to fear them were they not.
True, Mound, but polls do show that the majority favour tighter gun control. I will assume these results reflect the position of the sane people left in the good ole U. S. of A.
It is encouraging to see a trickle of gun owners coming forward to support gun control, some of them even backing a ban on assault rifles. I'm a gun owner. I've got three rifles and a shotgun. On the increasingly rare occasions I go up some forest road I still bring a rifle for personal protection. I'm just never going to face down a cougar again empty handed. Yet I see absolutely no purpose for assault rifles. People buy them because they carry a bad-ass connotation. Black rifles are designed and built for killing people. My lever-action Browning .308 is pretty humble looking compared to any AR-15. And my rifle only holds four rounds in the magazine, the theory being if you can't stop a cougar or bear attack in the time it takes you to aim and fire four rounds, the critter is going to be on you anyway. I also enjoy going to the range. An assault rifle is the equivalent of running around in a Darth Vader helmet.
Your armaments seem quite reasonable, Mound. Many Americans, however, with their passion for assault rifles, seem to embrace overkill in every sense of the word.
It's good to see articulate young people who know propaganda when they see or hear it, Lorne.
ReplyDeleteTheir passionate articulation gives me a modicum of hope, Owen.
