2024 Begins - But Where Will It End?

And Patrick Corrigan offers this apt and incisive cartoon to help us usher in the new year.

While the threats to democracy are world-wide, three former Trump staffers warn the danger is particularly acute in the U.S. if their former boss returns to the White House. You can read all about it here.

  1. The rich and powerful (otherwise known as the top 1%) tend to not like democracy. Oh, they like democracy for themselves, just not for the rest of us. Starting with Reagan every American president has made life better for billionaires. Their main thrust was to destroy Roosevelt's New Deal and all social services wherever they find them. (Scandinavian countries look out; they are coming for you. Like him or not, Trump is a billionaire (or at least says he is) and other billionaires are probably funding his rabid supporters, much as American money flowed to the truckers revolt in Ottawa. So, follow the money.

    1. Excellent point, Anon. We forget the past too easily, and accept the present and its trends too readily.

    2. Do we know for sure that organized money from America supported that demonstration?

    3. A good question, John. Apparently, according to the an Associated Press analysis,, 44% of funding came from Americans:

  3. .. the planet.. as we know it - is shrinking daily
As much as we may love analogy & metaphor to aid us..
or help make sense of what confuses or overwhelms us..
so too must we note who is poisoning or toxifying
such signposts of a healthy society..
Even worse.. our ‘collective memory’ is under assault
as is ‘our collective history of civilization on ‘spaceship earth’
Will return Lorne.. (and your commentariat - and excellent associates !) & ideally better armed with ‘useful ideas, mental tools, perspectives’ etc.. but preferably with links to those who are seemingly light years ahead of my capabilities, means or usefulness.. good persons.. a la better angels !

One excerpt from a book review I spotted via ‘substack’ was in regard to ‘Accidental Deification’ .. Is that not what Donald Trump has transmogrified into ? An Accidental Deity ? Pierre Poilievre ?
Is the confluence of Mainstream / Social / Media / Politics / Religion / Polls also fabricating > creating Accidental Devils ? .. Cultivating ‘HERD MENTALITY’ ?

    1. That our world is wrestling with a multitude of crises, political, spiritual, and existential, is beyond doubt, Sal. I often wonder as well, in these bleak days, whether someone with real vision and purpose could forge the kind of change in outlook and practices that we sorely need. Is real vision and new direction possible? Time, I guess, will tell, although personally I am not hopeful of such a possibility.
