The rich and powerful (otherwise known as the top 1%) tend to not like democracy. Oh, they like democracy for themselves, just not for the rest of us. Starting with Reagan every American president has made life better for billionaires. Their main thrust was to destroy Roosevelt's New Deal and all social services wherever they find them. (Scandinavian countries look out; they are coming for you. Like him or not, Trump is a billionaire (or at least says he is) and other billionaires are probably funding his rabid supporters, much as American money flowed to the truckers revolt in Ottawa. So, follow the money.

That our world is wrestling with a multitude of crises, political, spiritual, and existential, is beyond doubt, Sal. I often wonder as well, in these bleak days, whether someone with real vision and purpose could forge the kind of change in outlook and practices that we sorely need. Is real vision and new direction possible? Time, I guess, will tell, although personally I am not hopeful of such a possibility.
