Wildfires are raging across the Arctic as warm, dry conditions persist across the region. Satellite images have revealed wildfires burning in Alaska, Greenland and throughout Siberia.
Whereas an Arctic forest fire typically lasts just a few hours or days, peat fires, which burn deep into the ground, can last weeks.
Peat also stores large amounts of carbon. As the Arctic's fires continue to burn, record amounts of CO2 are being released into the atmosphere.

2019: What A Year So Far
With the Arctic now on fire, and the pace of climate change accelerating rapidly, even the dimmest or most ideologically bent amongst us must realize the peril we are in, and yet, remarkably, nothing seems to move us to do anything beyond giving lip service to the crisis. What a species we are, eh?

As the pace of climate change accelerates our leaders, in whom we entrust the resources and authority to deal with it, look the other way and so fall ever further behind even as they continually pat themselves on the back for what they claim is a job well done.
ReplyDeleteAnd far too many people are willing to believe their pernicious and perfidious lies, Mound.
Delete.. we know there are few votes to be gained by stating, maintaining strong positions regarding climate change.. reflecting in Parliament how drastic, dire this planet and Canada's situation is.. the truly bitter and accelerating reality facing our generations. Canadian federal or provincial government does not want to admit they would be powerless to control or stop mass foreign migration due to climate change, environmental disaster.
ReplyDeleteStrange as it may seem to many.. people from other lands do not want to starve (or let their children die, be bombed or murdered), have no water, suffer factional & religious strife, extensive corruption, social breakdown.. mass panic. Where will they go.. or end up eventually ? Why not Canada eh ? Where there is land, water, arable soil.. shelter, wood for fire and heat.. decent folks.. ie 'the last redoubt'
It won't matter a whit when astonishing numbers of 'boat people' hit our marine shores.. that Immigration, or Customs or RCMP declare its illegal. Won't matter at all what a Doug Ford says.. or an Ezra Levant. Not that in any way I support a POS like Donald Trump.. but we aint seen nothing yet.. when the great migrations commence.. title to land won't matter, they will come and come and come.. somehow they will arrive & in truly astonishing numbers
And do we in Canada think well to do folks in Scotland or Italy or Spain won't come here to beat the rush ? As migrants flood and distrupt their countries ? Hell, my black Irish ancestors bailed on Ireland well before the famine. Early 1800's.. somehow found passage to the new world eith zero money, or possesions.. just packed up and hit the docks of Liverpool. It will be epic.. Whatever our views are on this.. those 'views' won't matter a damn.. they will come
I saw this coming a long ways back.. No Coast Guard, no militia, no air force, navy, no RCMP will be able to 'manage' or control this. That old saying.. 'it is what it is' will be so true.. and the lyrics of Bruce Cockburn too, so true, so prophetic .. 'the problem with normal is it always gets worse'.. as well as 'the beautiful creatures are going away'.
Apologies re the depressing prognosis. Harper et al were but a toxic electoral warning signal lasting 10 bitter years.. now we're into a new epoch.. where we allow 'government' to be idiot failures.. buying F-35's and exporting arms.. purportedly, this is 'nation building' for 'the public good'.. redefining Canada as a jerkwater clone of Making America Great Again .. lock stock and barrel sold out.. 'open for business' ?
Are we victims.. or in all reality, volunteers..? We are rushing to the precipice of Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump.. full tilt boogie.. ready to plunge.. the flight, the fall does not hurt you.. its the hard landing that kills
I suspect that in the not-too-distant future, Sal, your words will prove prophetic; the signs are all there, for those who care to take the blinkers off.
Delete.. I may have more to say on this, as we go down the road.. Factoid A - I do not believe our old tired archaic 'political system' and Parliament are capable of 'the right stuff'. It's outdated, its over Rover. An example ? We may have certain 'progressive' legislation here and there.. but now it gets repealed as soon as a new government gets a majority. Doug Ford, Stephen Harper, Donald Trump are examples of this.. Harper trashed the Experimental Small Lakes by stripping its funding. That was dirtbag ideology.. how did WE allow this to be acceptable? Trump and fracking in US National Parks. Ford or a Jason Kenney, Trudeau buys US a pipeline.. with no evidence a valid business case will ever be provided.. But get the dilbit to 'tidewater' and boom shakalaka.. the miracle of loaves and fishes.. its suddenly sweet ethical benchmark 'oil' on par with West Texas light or North Sea Brent sweet oil.. but its not and never will be.. its Tinkerbell unicorn fantasy
ReplyDeleteFactoid B - Mainstream media is primarily out of control. Lazy, irresponsible.. playing to social media like underbrush to a forest fire. I cannot afford to view any of the main media websites .. I get 5 views of free Globe, Star etc, refuse to read any Sun website 'news'.
I get fab resource via Indy Bloggers, Twitter supplied links, excerpts, context, balance, family & friends via Facebook.. and I can speed read like a demon, or reread critical articles, reference, docs.. at my leisure.. and plod like a Clyde or Belgian horse hauling a big hayload, or dance like a quarter horse re excellent reportage.. I do not 'do echo chamber' - stay non partisan.. I wish more Canadians could be like my main & fave sources.. balanced, civilized, real... .. exemplars. I hope there are kids out there who already far outshine my ambitions.. kids with short fuses when fed horseshite salad..
My 'take' is we are now at 'in the trench' time.. but we must go guerilla.. force concessions, then force more from 'governance' .. Extract it. Yes, yes.. its tough being a Prime Minister or Premier.. or public servant.. but that is the 'scope of work' - the job description.. the task.. just like a 'journalist' is meant to perform their task.. or a garbage collector or lawyer or truck driver, or teacher or nurse or biologist.. expectations are to be met or the bar raised even..
A great Blue Jay 3rd baseman once said.. 'This isn't the 'try league.. its the 'get it done league' .. words to remember.. Do we plan to accept mediocre or failure, rather than excellence ? That's a dead canary in a coal mine & nobody noticing
I love the Blue Jay quote, Sal. Sadly, most of the ones occupying public office today are clearly not in the 'get it done league.' Fans, ie., the electorate, need to demand much, much more.
