Bad News From The North

No matter how you parse it, this is extraordinarily bad news. That glacier melt is taking place at an alarming rate is bad enough, but the nature of that melt, as you will learn in the following report, should make all of us very, very nervous.

You can read more about the study here. Time is of the essence, despite people like Rona Ambrose calling Canada's pursuit of climate change mitigation measures "complete insanity" in light of the current madness in the White House.

  2. "If Canadians don't safeguard (the Arctic ice), who will?" Is Eric Sorenson on sound mind? How in hell are we, i.e. Ottawa, going to safeguard the Arctic at this point? In the dark of the Arctic winter this year has seen no fewer than three sustained heatwaves in which temperatures shot up as much as 30C above normal. To suggest we've got any high cards left to play in this hand is delusional. At this point we're just along for the ride.

What we need to do, immediately, is to take the measure of the changes underway and how we can best respond to what's coming. How much of the population across the north needs relocation or other assistance? In the south, how much of our essential infrastructure is unsuitable to meet the more extreme conditions of the anthropocene? What sort of costs are we looking at and how are we to reform our "everyday low taxes" mindset that has left every level of government in Canada defunded? How long can we pretend that we don't have to change - just about everything - including how we are organized economically, politically, even socially if we're not to be overtaken by these events? Or shall we go the way of the Easter Islanders and Mayans?

    1. All excellent points and questions, Mound. I fear the answer is in your final sentence.
