Unless you have been living under a rock (or more likely, the cool of your basement), you will know about the weather catastrophe occurring in the West, and, to a slightly lesser degree, in the East. People are dying at an unprecedented rate from the heat, and it is only going to get worse. As well, infrastructure that was built to cooler Canadian standards is buckling.
None of this bodes well for our future. To get a real sense of how dire things are, I would suggest you watch the following video from the beginning. If pressed for time, start at the five-minute mark and watch the two reports that ensue.
At this late stage of things, the only real hope we have is in fortifying our infrastructure from the horrors to come, as the second of the two reports makes clear.
It was an incredible relief last night as the overnight dropped to 17 C. Yesterday had been another three cold shower day but the North Pacific finally returned around midnight. My town got to 39.5 on Monday, 38 at the seaside. It drove home the realization that there are very few places that are immune to these heatwaves.
ReplyDeleteThe next question concerns the wildfire season. I wonder how the prime minister's crews are faring as they drive through the new Trans-Mountain pipeline that the world absolutely does not need.
I suspect that the wildfire season will be especially hellish, Mound.
DeleteAll these losses and more losses yet to take in a world of massive profit-taking. Should I be confused?
ReplyDeleteYou would not be alone in your confusion, John.
DeleteAnd Mr. Trump claims it's a Chinese hoax, Lorne.
ReplyDeleteThere are those who undoubtedly yet take comfort in that delusion, Owen.
DeleteThe skies above my place are thick with helicopters - Vietnam era Hueys. They indicate that the nearby provincial forest fire fighting school is going full tilt. They familiarize crews with insertion and extraction via helicopters and the chopper pilots also qualify on water bombing techniques.
ReplyDeleteWe could sure use that 12-16 billion Trudeau is squandering on his pipeline for infrastructure repair/replacement. Then again perhaps we should be content with his fulsome "thoughts and prayers."
no doubt in some circles, Mound, his sentiments will carry the day. The rest of us are too busy confronting harsh realities.
