Prejudice and bigotry die slowly, Lorne. I was brought up in a Waspish Ontario family. Anti-papist to the core. When I was young my mother told me she wouldn't object if I married a person of colour or a Jew, anyone but a Catholic.
When I was a youngster my parents forbad me from playing with the Liddy kids across the street because they were Catholic.
A decade later they had gotten past that. An Italian family moved in next door. Marco and my dad couldn't get along until, one day, they became friends and stayed friends for the rest of their lives. A French-Canadian guy on the other side, a Knight of Columbus, same thing - best friends. It pleased me to no end to see my parents rise above a generations-old bigotry.

Thanks, Mound. Point well-taken.
