Natural Climate Solutions - Protect, Restore, Fund

While it would be dishonest to suggest that I harbour any real hope for the future, I admire deeply those with the strength of character, vision, and resilience to keep fighting the good fight on climate change. Well-known activist Greta Thunberg and Guardian journalist George Monbiot remind us that an important ingredient in climate-change mitigation is nature itself:
The protection and restoration of living ecosystems such as forests, mangroves and seagrass meadows can repair the planet’s broken climate but are being overlooked, Greta Thunberg and George Monbiot have warned in a new short film.

Natural climate solutions could remove huge amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as plants grow. But these methods receive only 2% of the funding spent on cutting emissions, say the climate activists.
The following short video offers a concise overview of what they are advocating:

  1. I don't think the vegan diet is doing Greta any favors. It's caused her to not start puberty.

    1. I published your comment, Anon, only so that anyone who reads it can be witness to your capacity for irrelevance and inanity.

  2. It's a compelling video. But, as UBC professor William Rees wrote in the latest Tyee: "Homo sapiens are not primarily a rational species. When forced to make important decisions, particularly decisions affecting our economic security or socio-political status, primitive instinct and raw emotion tend to take the upper hand. This is not a good thing if the fate of society is at stake."

This does nothing to detract from the Thunberg/Monbiot vid. It merely shows that human nature makes their plea for action a poor bet.

They decry the loss of forests but there are two reasons for it - overpopulation and rapacious levels of consumption. Both of those beasts have to be tamed if we're to pursue the nature remedy. Excluding deserts, most of the world's remaining wilderness is in just two countries - Russia and Canada. Most of that remaining wilderness if boreal and, as such, under stress from climate change and invasive species of insects and diseases. In the UK these have claimed the Ash, the mighty Oak and Elm forests.

I realize I'm jaded but a huge win for me would be if the Trudeau Liberals stopped the multi-billion dollar subsidies for the fossil energy giants. Fat chance.

    1. I hear you, Mound. There is little to be hopeful about when it comes to the choices our species make.
