The Unkindest Cut Of All

Devolution. Debasement. Depraved Indifference. Apply whatever term you like, but the cuts coming furiously from the Ford government in Ontario surely bespeak a state that no ruling body, and by extension, its citizens, should promote or countenance.

While I hesitate to speculate on what pathology drives Doug Ford to dismantle programs that benefit our vulnerable planet and the people who live on it, it is interesting that many of the cuts target initiatives of the preceding Liberal government. Perhaps the unkindest cut of all is axing our tree-planting program, one that is needed now more than ever:

Rob Keen, CEO of Forests Ontario, said since 2008 more than 27 million trees have been planted across Ontario through the program, which saved landowners up to 90 per cent of the costs of large-scale tree planting.

It was started as a carbon sequestration program, Keen said, but planting that many trees also helps clean the air and water, protect shorelines and reduce erosion.
Meanwhile, as floods ravage Ontario and Quebec, the Ontario government has cut funding for flood management by 50%.
Ontario conservation authorities say the provincial government has cut their funding for flood management programs in half.

Conservation Ontario, which represents the province's 36 conservation authorities, said impacts of the cuts will be felt immediately, particularly in smaller and more rural areas.

"Cutting natural hazards funding is particularly problematic right now in light of the fact that — like everywhere else — Ontario is experiencing stronger and more frequent flood events as a result of climate change impacts," general manager Kim Gavine said in a statement.

"Using a watershed-based approach, conservation authorities deliver effective and cost efficient flood management programs across the province, partnering for many years with the province, municipalities and others."
This morning, I was trying to think of the right word to describe how I feel about what is happening in my home province, and I am still searching. Heartsick, apoplectic, outraged, none of these words seem adequate in light of the ravages being wrought by this renegade and his many enablers, a.k.a P.C. MPPs and Ford Nation.

Thomas Jefferson said, “The government you elect is the government you deserve.” If the citizens of Ontario sit passively by and allow this marauder to continue with his dangerous, short-sighted dismissal of the things that make life bearable, they need only take a daily look in the mirror to affix blame.

  1. Like the Orange Madman to the south, Lorne, Ford is a sociopath who is fixated on his immediate predecessors.

  2. Meanwhile there is a report out there that when first asked about the tree planting cuts the premier had to ask his staff what it was all about......
Sounds about normal for this government! Wonder who is pulling the puppets strings?

    1. I was just reading the Twitter thread on this, Rural. Unbelievable! https://twitter.com/Thisisupcountry/status/1121626979097145344

  3. .. by now, Lorne.. you may be aware I have background (and 'standing') re addiction, violent offenders, mood disorders. I am not a health care practitioner nor a clinical specialist, or have a single degree.. I was essentially 'a field worker' within communities. I was the blunt edge rubbing up against challenging people with serious issues who needed serious attention from 'the system' - it was most often court ordered

Upon a time, yesrs later, I came across a very strange phenomena when working with or for or among certain adults. Successful, even respected or highly regarded folks, with families etc etc. Perhaps you have seen the same phenomena yourself...

Its a person who is highly addicted to the sound of their own voice. They actually may squirm & feel uncomfortable.. not hearing their voice. They ease that pain by talking.. a lot. Cel phones were an accellerant for them. A gift from the gods.. thus they could bark orders, or hold forth, control, command while driving ! The media perhaps fawned upon them..

Now just apply that crude differential diagnosis I present. It is often accompanied by an urge to micro manage 'things' - it doesn't really matter what 'things' .. its anything or everything.. Maybe its a 'saviour' complex.. I dunno. Maybe its comorbid within sociopaths. I do notice as well, there are tendancies to tantrum - sometimes publically in stunningly infantile levels.. I mean 'meltdown' jump in the air, feet stamp acting out, red faced, shouting ...

So revisit Doug Ford, or Donald Trump, Stephen Harper et al.. you know.. the 'smartest guy in the room' types.. Jason Kenney, Andrew Scheer. All very glib, often nonsensical.. 'overlords' .. and they've been practicing since they were playing (or throwing sand) in sandboxes.. or playing Hide n Seek. Its quite astonishing & in positions of power.. I find it intolerable, crude.. ignorant

    1. Your reference to those addicted to the sound of their voice especially resonates, Sal. I encountered many such types, usually occupying administrative positions, during my teaching career. It is sad that whatever semblance of 'power' some people achieve, they feel the need to abuse it. And that, of course, is certainly what is at work in the machinations of Doug Ford and his acolytes.

    2. .. the 'sound of my sister' a noted Ontario education exemplar.. (Catholic Board) was the end story for many a whiner or partisan, or flawed 'public servant' .. Her current reflection is - Doug Ford is systemically destroying years of educational curriculum evolution and 'best practice'

Should we thank Charles McVety, a jaded biblical era heretic. having secret beers, tokes, licks or snorts in the Ford basement rec room - Crack coke is never out of reach for such well funded political partisan or quasi evangelical losers or predators.. and complete fakers.. Make no mistake.. such types.. are rife. The bizzaro partisan, fuckery 'whisperers' ..

    3. As a retired teacher, I know how devastating this education cuts will be, Sal. I wonder if Ford is counting on the fact that so much of the public, especially those residing in Ford Nation, see teaching as a soft touch, with too many holidays and a good pension. The politics of resentment are never far below the surface, with demagogues always happy to lend a helping had in stoking them.

  4. That twitter thread doesn't surprise me. It doesn't answer who's running the joint, but it really solidifies suspicions that it's not him. His new plan to save teaching jobs seems to imply that as long as nobody retires, then class sizes won't be affected (unless they force retirements). It's all so weird.

    1. The logic of Ford is elusive, Marie. I am lost in it.
