So says Rajendra Pachauri, chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, if we are to take action to limit the global average temperature increase to two degrees Celsius:
Six years ago we said that emissions would have to peak by 2015 if we wanted to hold them to 2C. The cost rises the later you do it. Countries have to decide what would be the implications of inaction."
You can watch the brief video explanation here.
Lorne, Rajendra Pachaur is not fired yet by Harper? He is a brave man.
ReplyDeleteI believe he is beyond the reach of Mr. Harper's disdain for scientific data, LD, but should he ever consider applying for Canadian citizenship, I think he will encounter problems. ;)
DeleteYup. Scary times.
ReplyDeleteSadly, Marie, our political and corporate overlords seem to know no fear.
ReplyDeleteAny effective action on global warming depends on global security and stability. The latter, it seems, are in decline at even faster rates than greenhouse gas emissions are increasing. It is quite probable that we have left it all too late.
ReplyDeleteThe cynic in me suspects, Anon, that even if conditions were ideal, our governments would still find a reason to do little or nothing.
DeleteIt's not as if the evidence for what is happening -- and will happen -- is unavailable, Lorne.
ReplyDeleteI daresay, Owen, that even the most enthusiastic advocate of unfettered capitalism cannot be blind to this reality.
