A Humbling Realization

The older I get, the more I realize that I really don't understand people. For someone who for a long time thought otherwise, it is a humbling realization.

The story of  Toronto registered nurse Jess Faraone is a case in point. She

arrived at Pearson International Airport this week and refused to wear a mask, undergo a COVID-19 test or cooperate with the mandatory three-day hotel quarantine period despite legislation requiring all international travellers to do so to protect public health.

Jess Faraone returned to Toronto from a trip to Tanzania on Thursday prepared to fight the COVID-19 airport rules, which have been implemented to protect the health and safety of travellers as well as all Canadian residents, and she shared the unpleasant encounter with airport officials that followed on her Instagram stories.

Why a so-called health-care worker would behave in such a flagrantly dangerous, contemptuous manner is hard for me to understand. Is it simply a manifestation of the rampant narcissism that the age of social media has made possible, even encouraged?

I really don't know, but I can only hope that she will face sanctions by her professional association for behaving in such a willful, wanton way that will doubtlessly encourage others to follow her reckless example.

the way to strengthen it is to oppose it or prove it false

    resist at all costs

  2. It will be worth following Jess Faraone's return to work. She claims to be a registered nurse but I'm not convinced. There was a time her behaviour would not be tolerated but, as you write, things change. She plainly has no consideration for anyone but herself.

  3. She is employed by the Toronto Cosmetic Surgery Institute (1 416 834-6640). Some "front line worker."

  4. Like you, Lorne, I am mystified by our behaviour in present circumstances. But I have come to understand why Mark Twain called us "the damn'd human race."

  5. .. It's an unusual story, but I tend to see it as 'acting out' - usually a sign of emotional disturbance, mood disorder.. Someone 'struggling with themselves.

If she is indeed an RN - Registered Nurse then she is governed accordingly. I have made information videos for the Canadian and Ontario bodies. The Canadian body actually has a 'courtroom' in their premises, Toronto and lawyers who will work every case under consideration - from both sides. There are other levels.. Nurse Practitioners.. It's highly self regulating & they don't fool around.

In today's viral global social media this young woman jumped off the page .. amen. We may not hear of her again, whatever. Maybe her lover dumped her. The few quotes I heard of her 'I'm a Canadian citizen' repeated several times sounded or read hysterical - as per my observation above.

I'm more concerned by an elected MP from Fort McMurray - Cold Lake issuing a petition to ban use of the term 'assault rifle' in OUR House of Commons.. What then of Ecole Polytechnique ? What weapon can we say murdered them ? What of Site C infected work camps ? What of Mountaintop Removal is not Mountaintop Removal if 10% of the Foothills Mountain remains sez Jason Kenney ? What of the imaginary world of Doug Ford's 'Iron Ring of LTC Protection' or his current retroactive repeal, thus 'never happened' re Duffins Creek protective laws ? Was the death of our Maritime Fisheries a figment of our imagination under retroactive law repeal? What about Mr O'Toole and his group photo with only a nephew wearing a mask ? Or Randy Hillier ?

We have big fish to fry.. Best we build the BBQ for a long haul..

    1. Your points are well-taken, Sal. However, the flagrant actions of the Jess Faraones of the world, in my view, also require attention and consequences.

  6. I wish I had Jess Faraone's problems. She's sure to become a heroine to some collection of nitwits.

    1. No doubt, John, that narcissists far and wide will exult in Faraone's 'achievement.'
