Forecast: Expect more of the same and worse in the days, weeks, months and years to come.
We need to realize how these events leave lasting and accumulating scars. Extreme weather events - flood, drought, heat, cold - are losing their "extreme" cachet. They're our new normal. "Extreme" needs to be reserved for what's coming five years from now, ten years, twenty, fifty as the atmospheric greenhouse gases already baked into the system and all the greenhouse gases we will keep adding to the atmosphere keep heating the planet.
ReplyDeleteAustralia has people like Tony Abbott still fiercely championing coal. We have Justin relentlessly pimping bitumen. The US has Trump.
We still don't understand how many climate tipping points we've passed but there are several. We can't find the resolve to deal with man made global warming. How shall we deal with natural inputs that are now adding to the warming?
To me it sometimes feels as though we've pulled the pin and released the spoon from a grenade we just can't get out of our hand.
No matter how bad things are and will get, Mound, politicos and people in general refuse to confront the truth. There will be no reprieve or relief, in my view.
DeleteWhistling past the graveyard, Lorne.
ReplyDeleteThere seems to be a lot of that going on, Owen.
