She's a bagful of dirt, Lorne. America may rue the day that unscrupulous opportunists discovered that integrity is effectively irrelevant in politics. What determines how far, and how low, you can go is the number of voters who will buy what you're saying. If you can engage and energize a segment of the electorate, I like to call them "Gullabillies", with utter nonsense and appeals to their prejudices and baser instincts then deceit comes closer to the gold standard. It doesn't matter that the other end of the voter spectrum sees through you because you're not after their votes.
Harper played a more subtle version of that game. He knew the percentage vote he needed to get a majority. He knew the hard Conservative vote he could rely on. He knew all he needed to do was prey on the difference by playing on their fears and bigotry to put him over the top.
Part of his demise is that he lost a good chunk of the 'safe' Conservative base who just couldn't accept what Harper had done to Canada.
One hopes that, like we did, Americans will come to their senses, Mound. Somehow I suspect that the Conservatives are watching this race very closely, along with the fortunes of the Trudeau style, before they decide the face of their next incarnation, which is probably why they are waiting until May of 2017 to select a new leader.
America is done Lorne. Chomsky has said that the Republican party is no longer a political party, I agree with him. I think our reform/alliance /cons. are also not a political party.I don't know how much further down the presidential GOP candidates road, will have to go before they are considered not qualified to be the president of the US. The fact that Trump and Cruz are even considered to be capable of being president is an indication culturally, intellectually and politically how far down the rabbit hole America has dropped. But with America's Military/Industrial complex controlling the office of the President, does it really matter who becomes President?
Since democracy has given way to plutocracy in the selection of presidential candidates, Pamela, character, intellect and vision seem but quaint concepts with little or no intrinsic value anymore.

As your post clearly shows, Salamander, Canada has more than its share of buffoons that give us little to be proud of either.
DeleteFrom the Party of Lincoln to the Party of Palin. Truly a sad state of affairs, Lorne.
ReplyDeleteIt does give one reason to wonder about the future of democracy in "the greatest country in the world," doesn't it, Owen.?
