Stephen Harper's Sins

On the day that Stephen Harper is to receive his World Statesman of the Year award from the Appeal of Conscience Foundation, presumably for his unstinting and uncritical support of Israel, the Huffington Post has a timely piece reminding us of some of the Prime Minister's myriad failings on both the international and domestic front.

Those who prefer to think critically rather than simply absorb propaganda will find the article of some interest.

  1. I understand this award is a joke. It is some kind of slapdash organization who hands out these awards.

  2. Given that the mandate of the foundation is the promotion of religious freedom, human rights and democracy, the award to Harper indeed makes it hard to take the organization seriously, LeDaro.

  3. I'd be curious to see how much various Conservatives donated to this organization in the past few years.

  5. Lorne,

There is an interesting story in the Ottawa Citizen on this:

"OTTAWA — Prime Minister Stephen Harper flies to New York Thursday to accept a “world statesman” award from a little-known group, but he will not be joining more than 100 world leaders for the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly occurring just a few blocks away."

  6. Thanks for the link, LeDaro. I can't help but think that Harper's snubbing of the U.N. is consistent with the right-wing contempt for an organization that seeks to find common ground in the world, one that, in theory at least, is premised on co-operation rather than confrontation, the latter of which Harper and his acolytes seem to particularly relish.

I guess that's not surprising given the Conservative Party's absolutist, black and white view of the world.
