For the life of me I don't understand why anyone would vote for the orange clown. I particularly am stumped at women vote for politicians who tear down women's rights or people with darker skin than mine vote to pols who do them harm. I've seen explanations ever since Thomas Frank authored his "What's the Matter With Kansas?" https://tcfrank.com/product/whats-the-matter-with-kansas/ The only answer that explains it to me is that people can be stupid.
"Conservatives are not necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives.
John Stuart Mill
My guess is that many are not stupid so much as brainwashed and both uninformed and misinformed.
Most people in the USA seem to have been raised believing in US exceptionalism based on “interesting” interpretations of US history and hagiographies of “great” American heroes and statesmen. Thus, brainwashed.
My impression is that a majority of Americans are not terribly interested in national/state/level affairs and their knowledge of the rest of the world is close to nonexistent. [1]
Unfortunately the US mainstream media and entertainment channel, (See Fox Fairy Tales) are not exactly the best way to become an informed citizen.
Come to think of it, given the number of successful, mad, corrupt, fundamentalist preachers infesting the USA and perverting Christian dogma, it may be that a large subset of MAGA is less intelligent than I have been assuming.
I do think Scaramucci is correct about the gas prices hitting Trump hard but I think he is wrong about Trump not caring. He cares if anything gets in the way of his Nobel Prize or if the Republicans get wiped in the midterm elections and he goes down as the first successfully impeached US President. Obviously he does not care about the people.
1. See Tucker Carlson's interview with Ted Cruz about Iran. The level of ignorance was mind-boggling And this is a US Senator who should know a bit about a country he wanted the USA to attack. . I have to wonder if Cruz can find Cuba on a map.
I've often seen the narrowness of the American citizen's vision as both a product of their imperialistic culture and the failure of their educational system. To have attended school and left without developing even a scintilla of critical thinking is surely an indictment of that system.

I think you've nailed it here, Toby. Cults rarely operate with intelligence or reflection. Reflexiveness is their default position.
