As part of our 'new' relationship with the United States, Canadians are being encourage
d to vacation in our own country rather than spend our dollars in a hostile nation. For me, that is not a problem, since I have not been there since 2016 and have no intention of ever travelling there again.
And more and more Canadians are making that decision, with significant impact:
There appears to be no turning back on the journey away from the United States. Its animosity, its many dangers, are roadsigns all of us should heed.
Special Note: We will be doing our part in supporting our country by taking a little road trip to Montreal, starting today. See you when we get back.
My issue with staycations is that Canadian restaurants and services are increasing prices and even the demand for tips is increasing.
ReplyDeleteI have stayed in Victoria BC twice this year and the hotel prices have increased even though the hotel was not even half full.
Also infuriating is that, minor as it may be, the asking rate for tips is based upon the whole bill tax included; tipping on taxes is just wrong.
TB
When I tip, TB, I usually go 18%, not 20%, for the reason, as you state, that the tip is calculated on top of the taxes.
DeleteAs with Covid, it has become an excuse to gouge the customer.
DeleteTB
There is no turning back, I think, TB.
DeleteWow . Let me add AB is putting u.s. booze back on the shelves, as ever, nobody is really committed if a buck can be made. Covid proved booze was a necessity and travel a luxury didn't it? Take a tent , pack a lunch or if you can afford hotels and hotel meals ... tip ....no whining.... nobody twisted your arm to go.
ReplyDeleteCall if your ever homeless or food insecure. And for fun check behind that hotel or restaurant , there will be someone going thru the dumpster. Local color. :)
I did see that Alberta is putting the American booze back on the shelves, lungta. I do hope that Ontario remains resolute in that regard. Once the powers that be start going back to business as usual, expect Canadian pride and elbows to go down.
DeleteI seriously might make a bigger reduce reuse recycle sign and hitch hike 100 miles to see my cousin while she still remembers who I am.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with both objectives, lungta.
