Thomas Mulcair's Stance On Israel

Thomas Mulcair, who has just been endorsed by The Star as the best candidate to lead the NDP to power, is an MP I became familiar with during the lead-up to the last federal election. A frequent guest on Evan Solomon's Power and Politics, the member from Outremount impressed me with his fierce intelligence and cool demeanour (contrary to all this talk about his 'legendary temper'). There is, however, one thing about him that I find both disappointing and troubling, and that is his stance on Israel.

As reported in Canadian Dimension, Mulcair made the following statement in 2008:

“I am an ardent supporter of Israel in all situations and in all circumstances.” [“…je suis un ardent supporter de toutes les instances et de toutes les circonstances d’IsraĆ«l.”]*

~Thomas Mulcair, quoted in Canadian Jewish News, May 1st, 2008

I am troubled by anyone who takes an unflinching, doctrinaire position on any subject (although I readily admit that probably describes me when it comes to my view of the Harper regime), and most especially when it comes to nation states. For example, the popular misuse of Stephen Decaur's line, My Country, right or wrong, favoured by American 'super-patriots' and jingoists, implies that unquestioning support must be given to one's country, no matter the circumstances. While unquestioning acceptance may be something the corporate state cheerfully encourages, it is unhealthy in the extreme, demanding as it does an abdication of critical-thinking skills in favor of blind obedience.

This, to me, is what Mulcair is saying in the aforementioned quotation, and while he is by no means unique in that perspective (look at Stephen Harper and his crew, for example), it is a position I can never endorse, not because I am anti-Semitic (I am not), but because I believe that it is extraordinarily dangerous to remove the actions of any country from critical scrutiny.

That kind of hubristic notion, history shows us, can have dire consequences indeed.

  1. I had to think about Thomas Mulcair's strong support for Israel when deciding whom I should support in the NDP leadership race. I have decided to support him because I want a leader who will be able to get the NDP to take on Stephen Harper and his Conservatives. I think he is the best leadership candidate. There are a few others that could also take on Mr. Harper. However, some of them would need some improvement over the next two or three years.

Mr. Mulcair can be staunchly pro-Israel. However, I have tried to re-jig the riding vote numbers on the UBC Election Forecaster. No matter how I re-jig them, I cannot see the NDP winning any riding with a significant Jewish population in Toronto and York Region along Bathurst Street. My advice to Mr. Mulcair is to show support for Israel, understanding for the Palestinians, and support a two-state solution that recognizes both groups fairly and meets their security needs. The NDP still won't win ridings with significant Jewish populations (except for Mr. Mulcair's). However, it can win a few extra ridings that have sizable Muslim or Arab Canadian populations.

Note: sizable could mean greater than ten percent of a riding's population.

    1. Historic, schmistoric, my supporting equality and justice in Palestine and Israel is in the here and now, not in some old scrolls written by bearded lunatics millenia ago!

  3. @ Skinny Dipper - "...it can win a few extra ridings that have sizable Muslim or Arab Canadian populations." How, by electing as its leader a pro-Zionist leader? There's an enormous logical disconnect there.

  4. It won't matter in the end. Yes Mulcair will be a good fightback speaker in this current hugely dysfunctional system. But 3rd party status is almost confirmed in the near future, so I'm not sweating it.
It isn't about an abdication of critical-thinking skills in favor of blind obedience, it is about he/others know what is going to go down, but won't share.

  5. OTOH, it would be nice to see Rae and caucus stop pretending to be the Opposition, Mulcair won't have that, he's an alpha male.

  8. Skinny Dipper, you are an ugly, hateful bigot and a hater of Jews. Even if Daniel Barenboim were to become Prime Minister of Israel, even if Israel were to give the Palestinians their rightful state of their own,you would still be a mocking, insensitive anti-semite,showing you hatred and bias for Jews. Read Rabbi Michael Lerner,or Rabbi Naomi Levy.
You are ignorant-read all about Dr Arnold Noyek,or Yehudi Menuhin. Coward! hiding behind a name like Skinny Dipper!
One of the great moral titans in Canada and NDP is Stephen Lewis. Hate Jews? Well Skinny Dipper, then Drop Dead!!

  9. We want a prime minister that puts Israeli citizens slightly before Canadian ones Israel needs our support and help to prosper and stay safe. Kudos to Harper for kicking out the Iranian embassy from Canada last week, That's the kind of guy we need

  10. Marc--you're not fooling anyone. You know as well as I do that Israel will never concede an inch of the land they stole from Palestine...unless they're forced. And that won't happen as long as our leaders continue to pander to fanatic criminals...and make absolutely no mistake....Zionism is a crime....
