That is a telling but benign description of the rightwing media and the problem of climate change. It's far more than cognitive dissonance. It's outright lying woven into a fabric of denialism. Their poor little rightwing minds aren't exploding. They're practicing the high art of propaganda and manipulation. Kay stays well short of denouncing them for that even as he admits it. NatPo is one small step above Ezra Levant and the Sun worshipers.
It was telling that Kinsella has come out and admitted that, if the New York Times gets the reality of climate change, he'll finally acknowledge it. This is a guy who proclaims himself informed and enlightened and yet represents the worst in today's Liberal movement.
I had a chat with Joyce Murray today about Trudeau's opposition to the NDP motion in opposition to FIPA. I asked why the Libs didn't simply abstain from the vote instead of supporting Harper if they found the NDP motion too political, especially given that they know Harper's majority would have defeated it. I got this lame and incomprehensible explanation that the Libs feel FIPA has some good aspects, protecting small business in China. So they want simply to see it heavily amended. Of course they have as much chance of amending the agreement as the NDP have to persuading the government to annul it. The response I got was utterly disingenuous.
I also asked Murray if the Libs were ready in case Harper calls a snap election. Her response - no. He pulled this stunt on Dion and on Ignatieff and still they don't get it. Yet they want us to believe they're ready to govern the country.
Yes, of course, Lorne. He could do it but he would be going into battle wounded by an amateurish PMO staffed with hacks. You need an A-list staff in your PMO to ride herd on caucus and riding associations, people connected with the establishment who can formulate policy and platforms. Harper has Ray Novak, the kid who sleeps in the rooms atop the garage at 24 Sussex Dr. This is not a PMO to take to war in a general election.
And there you have it. When the evidence doesn't fit your frame, you reject the evidence.
ReplyDeleteAnd in far to many cases, Owen, the media aids and abets such blinkered thinking.

Thanks for your report, Mound. The craven nature of politics as currently practised is very evident in Murray's reply.
DeleteI saw on the news that Duffy's trial will likely start in April - ample reason for Dear Leader to call a snap election, dontcha think?
