This is why when working for evil, you need to get payment up front. And then flee the country afterwards before evil thinks it won't be needing you anymore and can just take its money back. Another option would be to have some secret information hanging over evil's head, to hold it to the agreement.
On an entirely unrelated note, nobody's quite sure how Peter MacKay manages to remain as Minister of National Defence after the various scandals.
