Schellnhuber and others told us that our only hope of averting catastrophic climate change, runaway global warming, hinged on the "induced implosion" of the fossil energy industry. Governments of petro-states, such as our own, had to put them down just as you would an animal with rabies if we were to have even a reasonable chance of arresting global warming. Instead we've gone in the very opposite direction. OPEC and the International Energy Agency see a bright future for fossil fuels, including coal, well into the 2040s.
