The Pope Just Doesn't Know His Place

At least. that's what I infer from the blather of Catholic League President Bill Donohue:

No doubt, obeisance to the corporate agenda is what Donahue and his ilk expect from any self-respecting pontiff.

  1. One doesn't have to be a scientist to understand climate change. an historian to understand history, nor a political science major to understand politics.. Bill Donahue does is psychological evaluation of Bruce Jenner changing to a woman. Is he a psychology major? Faith, morality and ethics that The Catholic church seems to think they are the keepers and experts of, is relegated to them simply because of their say so. Faith yes, because their whole belief system if founded on faith. They might as well say , we don't need evidence to believe something exists. As to their claim that they are the authorities of morality, how so? There 10 commandments are just that commandments. When the Catholic church ruled it was called the dark ages for a reason. Saying that Pope Francis shouldn't speak about climate change because he does not have a scientific degree is ridiculous. Donahue said Pope Francis has 2 years of high school, but Pope Francis is a Jesuit. I think to become a Jesuit you study for 14 yrs, in philosophy no less. I may have not heard correctly what Donahue said and may not be completely correct about Pope Francis education. Either way he has a right to his comments on climate change and I applaud him for it.

    1. I agree completely, Pamela. People like Donahue use very selective filters when the talk about their faith, apparently believing that if Christ were to return today, he would be a right-wing Republican and enthusiastic patron of the corporate agenda.

And for the record, despite Donahue's distortions about the Pope's education, he earned a degree in chemistry from the University of Buenos Aires before studying to become a Jesuit: http://www.biography.com/people/pope-francis-21152349#synopsis

    2. Thanks for posting Pope francis education. I should have checked google before commenting. Donahue literally says that the Pope does not have a degree in chemistry, and his education is equivalent to 2yrs high school. Pope Francis has a M.Sc. in chemistry, a M.Phil and a doctorate in Theology. I can't picture a man becoming Pope, particularly in modern times with 2 yrs high school. His error seems like a put down to Pope Francis. Why is it that people like Donahue are given a platform to speak? There is nothing enlightening about what he has to say and he spouts off a number of untruths as fact. I'm pretty sure Pope Francis could not have become a Jesuit without his degrees in philosopy. I hope Pope francis keeps speaking his mind. I find it a refreshing change and I would love to sit down with him and talk philosophy.

    3. Truth seems to matter little to the extreme right, Pamela. And given the media support for their distorted messages, I'm not surprised.

  2. Jesuits are the rowdy intellectuals of the Catholic church. I know because I was educated by a few. Great guys. They knew how to teach, they knew how to drink. My favourite prof was a German Jesuit who wound up teaching after being turfed out of some South American hellhole for trying to fight child mortality by distributing condoms on public buses. He said when he arrived he found children were dying because their parents felt obliged to have far more kids than they could afford.

Over the centuries more than one pope has tried to turf the Jesuits from the church. Just like no one thought a black man would become president, no one imagined a Jesuit as pope.

    1. Since they are known for their intellect and their practicality, Mound, a Jesuit as pope may be up to the challenges posed by entrenched thinking and reactionary politics.
