A Quiet Dignity

There is a quiet dignity evident in a series of ads sponsored by a labour union supporting Obama's re-election bid. Although obviously directed to an American audience, the message is one that should not be ignored in Canada as various levels of government jump on the austerity bandwagon.

    1. It makes for a nice contrast to the stereotypes that the extreme right likes to invoke about public sector workers, doesn't it, Beijing?

    2. It certainly does, Lorne. People universally respect firefighters and seem to forget that they are public sector workers. But they seem to be the exception.

As for the myriad of other professions that ensure we have safe public transportation (mechanics, traffic controllers, drivers/conductors/pilots), educated kids (teachers), effective health care (doctors, nurses, techs, cleaners, kitchen staff), effective waste management and sewage (public works employees) and many, many more - well despite the importance of their work in providing us with safety, health and security, many people will turn on them on a dime should they dare strike. There is too often a belief that the private sector with its non-unionized workforce could easily replace all these people and provide the same level of quality services.
